Martin McLaughlin 1950-2025

Dear all,

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Professor Martin McLaughlin, one of the most respected and loved members of our academic community.

His leading expertise on Renaissance literature, his skills as a translator, his magnetism as a lecturer, were always accompanied by his great warmth and friendliness. Generations of Italianists  have greatly benefitted from his wisdom, kindness and good humour.

This is a great loss for the whole world of Italian studies, but particularly for us here at Oxford, where he had been teaching in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages since 1990, first based at Christ Church and then, since 2001, as the Agnelli-Serena Professor, at Madgalen. He was a founding member of ISO and was part of its Steering Committee until his retirement in 2017.

His wife Cathy and his daughter Mairi were with him at the end, and our hearts go out to them.

We will keep you posted about any commemorative events which we are sure will be held in the near future.
