A Walk through the Phlegrean Fields

Further information: Our speakers, who organize study and educational tours from Pozzuoli, Napoli under the title Learning and Fun, will focus on volcanology, archaeology and the nature of the Phlegrean Fields, Campi Flegri) north-west of Naples. They will do this using excerpts from English travel literature, (prose writers and poets) and photographs illustrating the archaeological and volcanic sites, describing the natural beauties of the area where history and nature uniquely merge with each other. Part of the talk will be devoted to the now largely submerged, Roman resort of Baiae which was considered the most elegant and fashionable of the Empire. Julius Caesar, Hadrian, Tiberius and Nero all built magnificent holiday villas there.
