Luigi Meneghello: Fiction, Scholarship, Passione Civile

Further information: A conference organised by the University of Reading, and held at the Italian Cultural Institute, 39 Belgrave Square, London.
Luigi Meneghello (1922–2007) was a novelist, essayist, scholar and, in 1961, the founder of the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Reading.
This conference, the first in the UK to be dedicated to this author, aims to celebrate and assess Luigi Meneghello’s double legacy: his place in the development of post-war Italian fiction and his instrumental role in developing a new, multidisciplinary model of Italian Studies in the UK University system.
Distinguished scholars of literature, linguistics, and history will contribute to the discussion.
The conference will take place also on the 13th June at the Museum of English Rural Life, Redlands Road, Reading.

Into Italy and Out of Italy: The Language and Culture of Migrants

Date: 14th Nov 2008
Further information: A conference to be held at the Italian Cultural Institute, London
14th and 15th November 2008
The aim of the conference is to bring together for the first time two different but related trends of research surrounding the language and culture of migration within the Italian context.
The first concerns the mass emigration of circa 26 million Italians (Haller, 1997) out of Italy during the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.
The second involves the more recent phenomenon of immigration into Italy.
In both cases, significant questions arise about the cultural and linguistic integration of such immigrant communities in their host country.
With the participation of eminent Italian and international scholars.
